The stuffed carrot is his favorite at the moment – squeeking like mad and leaping about with it 2 minutes ago and now he’s crashed and is sound asleep. Happy Birthday, kiddo!

Life's Short - Choose the Big Dream When You Find It
Finally found a bit of time to process the photos from this week for Project 365 – taking a photo a day for a year. I’ve kept up with it, but a few days have not been the best, as my focus has been on other parts of the business, but I suppose that’s just a part of the whole process here – training myself to keep my eyes open and my camera handy.
And, just because – here’s another cute photo of Rhad from last night – he’s really starting to pose. I call his name with the camera up and he’ll look at me and hold the pose until the flash goes off. Such a good boy. Hard to believe he’s almsot 6 months old now!

No, not a snow shark - it's Rhad!
It’s the first time Rhad’s really experienced deep snow – we’re up to 16″ and another 7-11″ are expected tonight. It was a fun day of going out to blaze some trails for him so he wasn’t completely exhausted – and took the camera with me each time. More to come…

5 Months © 2009 SnowMoon, LLC
Hard to believe it, but he’s 5 months old and developing QUITE the personality. We really lucked out with him – he is, hands down, the easiest puppy we’ve had. Our only problem is getting him to come in when we call WITHOUT playing a game. If it’s a game, he’ll come charging. If not, he’ll work to turn it into a game if he can. He loves hiding, and if I give up he comes CHARGING as fast as he can.
The other day, though, he didn’t. I couldn’t figure out where he had gone. I got Taylor and asked her where she put her puppy. The look she gave me was the equivalent of rolling her eyes. And she walked away and laid down. Ok, no emergency. I found him – stuck. He climbed up a snowpile onto a tiny ledge made from scrap material we used to block off ‘under the stairs’ from the digging Samoyeds. He could NOT figure out how to get off. He was stiff and frozen in place, terrified to move. I had to let him sniff my hand and get him to turn his head before I could lift him off his ledge that was maybe 6″ off the ground.
He did the same ‘freeze’ thing the other night when going to bed. We cuddle with them on the bed and both of us were out of the room. He decided to walk onto one of the end tables next to the bed. But there were ‘things’ on there and he couldn’t turn around. So he sat, waiting, frozen to the spot, but not scared because he knew where we were. Now had that been any Samoyed, the full water glass would have gone flying, the clock radio, and other items following the water glass.
He’s big enough now to handle all the stairs in the house on his own, and yet I still REALLY miss picking him up from his crate in the morning when we’re both half asleep, and while walking down the stairs, him nuzzling his head under my chin with happy little moans as he breathes in my scent. That time was short. It always is with babies.
Eating seems to increase Rhad’s energy to the point where he MUST run for at least a half an hour. Taylor and I do what we can to give each other a break. Taylor takes him outside for awhile, but he gets more into just following her around and still needs more romping. This week I got out the camera and after a few words of encouragement, Taylor got it. I asked her to take Rhad ‘down and back’ – so, down and back they went – again and again. When he got distracted, she grabbed a toy to help him run some more. She kept at it until he was ready to nap.
So shoes are his latest focus – if either one of us kicks off our shoes and he’s the slightest bit tired, he gravitates straight to them. I know puppies and dogs chew on shoes, or other things belonging to their owners to fill themselves with the scent. If they can smell you, it’s as though you’re right there with them. Knowing that, just makes this photo even sweeter for me. I’m glad to see he’s happy – even in his dreams.
A week ago last Friday we headed to the vet for the second round of shots – he adored getting all the attention from everyone – especially a well behaved young boy that kept remarking on how little he was. Just sweet to see those two interact. Eventually it was our turn and Rhad weighed in at 8 lbs 10 oz. Almost double what he was three weeks prior. He never even noticed the shot as he had a yummy vitamin treat to work on.
Since Rhad came, we’ve carried him up and down the stairs – and eventually we let him try the last step himself, which he did with a bit of help (without the help he’d do a handstand, completely vertical). This week, though, he finally grew enough to tackle the outside stairs himself. The inside stairs are still too steep, but in another week or two, I’m sure he’ll be able to handle those. Being able to send both of them out without having to always go out with them is a delight.
As I said in my last post, Taylor now accepts Rhad more and has even been seen with him asleep on her tail. We can tell she loves having a buddy to patrol the yard with.
Right now as I type this, Rhad is sound asleep at my feet. We’ve had him in an ex-pen (exercise pen) whenever we’re too busy to really watch him, or when he needs to sleep. He gets so wound up that he won’t sleep unless in the pen or crate. One of our goals this week was to get him to sleep on the outside of the pen. Goal reached. We also added a bed to the pen, with the eventual goal to have it outside the pen with Rhad knowing that’s his ‘spot’ in the house. It can fit in the crate, or be out on its own. We need to find one for Taylor as well as she keep trying to fit in it, but just can’t quite do it. We have one upstairs she uses at night, but I’d like to get one that looks better for the main room. The first morning after we got it, he slept solidly for almost 5 hours straight!
The other focus this week has been the commands “Leave It!” and “Take It!” – which works very well – we always taught Leave It, but never added Take It – but that addition really helped him to pick up on the fact that some things are not for dogs. Overall, he’s doing great with learning all the various house manners.
Happy Friday! Yesterday, while looking through my photos from this week to pick one for the Friday post, I found this one of Rhad plowing his way through 4-5″ of snow – definitely ‘deep powder’ from his point of view. I cropped it square and then that lower right hand corner was screaming for some text. So, I found Meryl Bartho’s Icy Cold Alpha to give that perfect touch. The other fonts used are Courier New and Elegant. An easy, simple layout – the type I tend to lean toward when I really like the photo.
